How this is calculated, and its limits
The World Bank publishes each country's income or consumption distribution in 100 equal-population groups. We take the latest survey for each of 172 countries, weight every group by its population (7.76 billion people in total), pool them and read off the world percentiles.
- Survey years differ by country, from 1992 to 2025.
- 100 of the 172 countries measure consumption (what people spend) rather than income.
- Values are per person, not per household, in 2021 PPP dollars: adjusted for price differences between countries, and not adjusted for inflation since 2021.
- For Argentina, only urban data are available, so that figure covers cities only.
